Vítor Constâncio

Vítor Constâncio (Lisbon, 1943) is the current vice-president of the European Central Bank.

In 1965 he got his degree in Economics at Universidade Técnica de Lisboa and some years later, in 1974 he coursed a post-graduate at University of Bristol. In 1985 he became the governor of Banco de Portugal (Portuguese Central Bank), and previously, in 1977 he was the vice-governor of the Bank.

In 1986 he left the Banco de Portugal and he became a member of the Potuguese Parliament for the following year and after that he held a position in the ISEG (University of Lisbon) as a guest professor. He combined this position with other jobs in the public service and then in 2000 he was again the governor of Banco de Portugal until 2010, when he became the Vice-President of the European Central Bank.
